Durisdeer lies off the A702, approached from the South by the M6/A74 and the A76 from Dumfries. To the North the A702 connects with the A74 Junction 14. Durisdeer is about 10 minutes drive north of Thornhill and about 30 minutes from Dumfries.

There is a direct bus service to/from Edinburgh city centre (Stagecoach, Service 102). The nearest train station is Sanquhar (10 mls), and mainline services are available at Lockerbie (50 mins by car), and Carlisle/Dumfries.
Half a mile up the path is a wonderfully preserved Roman Fort, and nearby there are many spectacular walks of varying lengths and ambition.
A few seconds from the door of Ferndale Studio are gentle hillside walks of outstanding beauty and serenity. Roman Soldiers (who built a fort), Robert Burns (who wrote a poem specially) and Sir Walter Scott all made their way past our door (well, maybe not the Romans..) Drumlanrig Castle and Gardens are just 4 miles away with the pleasant town of Thornhill 2 miles further on.
